Building the Computational Foundations of Modern Biomedicine

The Bakar Computational Biomedicine Initiative (BCBI) is a joint UC Berkeley-UCSF initiative built around a shared vision: important breakthroughs in human health will come not from any single discipline, but from their convergence. BCBI connects world-leading expertise in AI and machine learning with the extraordinary biological, experimental, and clinical ecosystem spanning the two campuses.  We aim to develop computational methods grounded in biology, use them to uncover disease mechanisms and guide experiments, and translate discoveries into better diagnostics and therapies. By connecting people, data, and ideas across disciplines and campuses, BCBI will tackle biomedical challenges that no single field or lab can solve alone, and train a new generation of scientists to move fluently across these boundaries and shape the future of computational biomedicine.

At UC Berkeley, the initiative is anchored in the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) and its new home, the Barbara and Gerson Bakar Gateway

At UCSF, the initiative connects to a wide ecosystem of research centers, initiatives, and institutes.

Faculty Hires

The recruitment of four new faculty in the Center for Computational Biology (CCB) at UC Berkeley.

Institute

An institute bringing together faculty from UC Berkeley and UCSF, as well as twenty four new postdoctoral fellows and four new research investigators.

BioJupyter

A new open-source computational platform, BioJupyter, for collaborative biomedical discovery.
